radiant superheater
A superheater that is directly exposed to the radiant heat of the boiler.
A chemical used in a chemical test to indicate the presence of a specific substance.
reasonably available control technology (RACT)
The environmental requirement for emissions from an existing boiler in a non-attainment area.
reciprocating feedwater pump
A positive-displace­ment pump that uses steam to apply pressure to a large piston in one cylinder connected to a small piston in another cylinder that pumps the water.
refuse boiler
A boiler that uses the municipal solid waste that would normally go to landfills.
regenerative air heater
An air heater that is divided into three zones: the gases of combustion zone, the sealing zone, and the air zone.
A formed sheet-metal plate with slots where the metal is bent on an angle. Also known as a diffuser.
A self-operating control valve used for pres­sure and temperature control.
resistance temperature detector (RTD)
An electronic thermometer consisting of a high-precision resistor with resistance that varies with temperature.
reverse osmosis (RO)
A filtration process in which the water to be treated is pressurized and applied against the surface of a semipermeable membrane in order to demineralize it and remove its impurities.
A variable-area flow meter consisting of a tapered tube and a float with a fixed diameter.
rotary cup burner
A fuel oil burner consisting of a quickly spinning cup that discharges the fuel oil with high-velocity air into the boiler, resulting in a fiery atomized fuel that mixes with air and ignites.
